Buffalo Jill of The Week Melissa M

This week, we look at 3rd year vet Melissa as our Buffalo Jill of The Week. Now the longest tenured-Jill on the squad, she's actually already put in 10 years in the pro ranks, with 7 seasons as a Bandette before transitioning to the Jills in 2011. As Christina's co-captain last season dancing between Hannah and Shelby H, she was to become a captain for the 2014 season. A country girl at heart, Melissa is most happy when she's performing or spending time with her husband, a guy whose sense of humor is sure to keep their marriage happy and long-lasting. Working in PR and communications, she's a gifted writer after graduating with honors with her Communications degree. She even shared some of her writing skills in her Bandettes days when some of her squadmates got named NLL Girl of The Week by writing about them. As far as contributions to the Jills, if you saw the Western gear that the squad wore for a few performances last season, I think it's safe to say we can thank Melissa for that. The flannel shirts-daisy dukes outfit has been a common thing at Bandits games with the Bandettes a few times a season and given Melissa's history with that squad, she had to have had some part of bringing that over. You can see all of Melissa's pics, including from her Bandettes days, at https://buffaloprocheerbuffalojills.shutterfly.com/jillsindividualpics/41069 Melissa's secondary photo is from the Ravens game and taken at the end of the 1st quarter. Shown passing by the tunnel are Melissa, Hannah, and Christina.

From the Bandettes, we feature a photo taken at the Bandits Opener against the Philadelphia Wings. Prior to the game, Kirsten's line was greeting fans at the top of the east bank of escalators. Shown posing for a photo are Mandy, Chrissy, Stephanie, Kirsten, Brianna, Danielle, and Lauren K.

Buffalo Jill of The Week Melissa

This week, we look at 2nd year vet Melissa as our Buffalo Jill of The Week. Melissa danced on Val's line between Nicole S and Alyssa U and, despite only being a 2nd year vet with the Jills, will have more experience performing in front of large crowds at professional level than anyone in Buffalo if she chooses to return in 2013. Nearly seven seasons as a key part of the Buffalo Bandettes dance team gave fans a look at her dancing talents but it wasn't until after she and the rest of the Bandettes performed with the Jills in Toronto that she thought about cheering in front of even larger crowds at Ralph Wilson Stadium. When most rookies try out, you always tend to wonder if they have what it takes or not and truthfully, at the Open Workshop that year, I did watch the former Bandettes out of the corner of my eye a lot to see how they were picking up the routine. But when you consider the Bandettes normally learn about 20 different performances a season, I had complete faith that Melissa could learn 1 in a week. You can read more about Melissa at http://buffalojills.com/profile.php?PID=58 Melissa's secondary photo comes from the Bills-Titans game in October and was taken late in the 2nd quarter when Val's line was in front of section 121. Shown getting the crowd revved up are Krystin, Melissa, Lisa, and Kelsey H.

Meet Melissa in this short video shot at Jills 1st cuts back in April.

Don't miss Melissa performing alongside Nicole L at 1st cuts for the judges as they show off their dance moves together.

Buffalo Jill of The Week Melissa

This week, we take a look at our other unconventional rookie as our Buffalo Jill of The Week. Melissa spent 6 1/2 seasons dancing as a Bandette with the last season as a captain after several as a co-captain. Spending her gamedays dancing on Valerie's line between Val and Loren, she's loving the experiences of being a Jill so far. As a matter of fact, it was working with the Jills last season in Toronto that got her thinking about trying it out. The last year has been a big one for her not only as far as the transition to the Jills, but in her personal life as well as she's now happily married to someone she's been with for several years. Brad not only has been there for her through her entire career but makes her and those around her laugh, something you need in every relationship. Besides the time she spends with her husband, nothing makes Melissa happier than when she's performing. When she's not performing, she's actually rather quiet , especially compared to most of her linemates like Valerie and Murissa. That doesn't mean she's shy or anything, though. One way she does express herself very well though is through writing. She started college as a communications  major with an interest in reporting and even after she switched majors, she wrote some NLL Girl of The Week articles on her squadmates for NLL.com. You can read more about Melissa at http://www.bandits.com/bbio.asp?bandID=Melissa Melissa's secondary photo comes from the 9th Annual Buffalo Jills Golf Tournament and was taken before the golfers started arriving as everything was being set up for the day. Shown posing for a photo are Natalie, Melissa, and Jenny.

Don't forget to watch Melissa and Beth together at 1st cuts putting on a great performance. Bandits fans have seen how outstanding they are for years...now Bills fans get to see it as well.

Bandette of The Week Melissa

This week, we take a look at one of the Bandettes captains for the 2011 season as our Bandette of The Week. Melissa spent 7 seasons dancing during Bandits games and, in addition to spending this season as a captain, served as a co-captain from 2008-2010. Dancing since the age of 2 and cheering since Jr High, nothing makes her happier than performing on the field, though I'm sure her (sorry guys) fiancé is a close second. At the very least he keeps her laughing. Knowing about the Bandette of The Week feature that Melissa's been featured in more than anyone else, he asked me earlier this season if he could be the inaugural "Mandette of The Week" with his status as her fiancé. While I have no intention of focusing on the significant others of the Bandettes or the Jills on this site, hopefully Brad will at least enjoy this shout-out in Melissa's feature. When not dancing or spending time with Brad, Melissa is a development specialist coordinating fundraisers and working with non-profit organizations after graduating with honors with her degree in Integrated Marketing. Melissa's secondary photo comes from the Buffalo Men's Show that featured both the Bandettes and the Jills. Shown posing for the camera are Beth, Melissa, Lauren B, and Krista.

Buffalo Pro Cheer Photos of The Week

This week's 1st Jills photo comes from 1st cuts and features 3 outstanding Jills dance veterans. From left to right are Murissa, Anna, and Stefanie. Murissa and Anna are both heading into their 3rd seasons on the squad while Stefanie is going into her 5th. Murissa's the type who loves the spotlight and the camera...as evidenced by the fact she strikes a pose more than any other vet on the squad. Anna was an early departure last season but the TV networks leaped for joy when she came back this year as the cameras seemed to love focusing on her. Stefanie contributes not only experience and beauty to the squad but some gymnastic ability as well as she's spent some time over the course of her Jills career doing some of the tumbling in Jills routines and performances.

Our 2nd Jills photo comes from an appearance in June at the West Valley-Ellicottville Alumni Football game. Appearing at the event were a pair of statuesque brunette Ambassadors in the form of Lindsay and Jessica W. Lindsay is going into her 2nd year on the squad and is known to overload herself with projects and schoolwork, something her fiance has been helping her to quit doing. Jessica is a rookie on the squad who also keeps herself very busy. She was one of two Jills to work both the Friday night and Saturday afternoon draft parties along with Loren, who also worked the Thursday event as well and after the appearance this photo was from, instead of going home, she went to cheer on her boyfriend in a softball tournament.

From the Bandettes, we feature a photo from the first home game against the Toronto Rock back in February. At the game, the Bandettes unveiled some new uniforms and after dancing in them during the 1st half, they posed for photos to show them off before they went out for their halftime performance. Shown posing here are Kirsten, Stephanie G, Lauren S, and Melissa. Kirsten and Lauren were in their 2nd seasons with the Bandettes while Stephanie flashed her pretty smile during her rookie campaign this year. Melissa, in her 3rd season as a co-captain, has been on the squad since 2005. Her 6 seasons makes her the longest-tenured veteran on the Bandettes.

Bandette of The Week Melissa

This week's Bandette of The Week is no stranger to anyone who's paid any attention to the squad at all the last few years. In her 6th season on the squad is Melissa, who's in her 3rd season as a co-captain on Meghan's line. She's been dancing since she was 2 and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. And she shouldn't...when she's performing seems to be when she smiles the brightest. In addition to her experience and leadership on the squad, she's also contributed to NLL.com as a writer when squadmates have gotten named NLL Girl of The Week in the past. She earned a degree in communications 2 years ago originally looking into journalism but switched her focus to Integrated Marketing and currently works as a development specialist coordinating fundraisers and working with the non-profit organization that the foundation she works for supports. Her foundation's gain is the journalism industry's loss but hopefully we'll still see the occasional article from her on NLL.com with more NLL Girl of The Week write-ups. Last month, the NLL gave her the honor herself, an award a long time coming. Check that article out at http://www.nll.com/article.php?id=4402

NLL GIRL OF THE WEEK - MELISSA

This week's Girl of the Week is Melissa, a member of the Buffalo Bandettes Dance Team. She is in her sixth year with team, having joined immediately after finishing high school and has served as a co-captain for the past three seasons.

Melissa started dancing at a young age and the passion has stayed with her through the years.

"I started dancing in a studio before I turned three years old. I studied tap, jazz, ballet, hip-hop and lyrical. I started cheerleading in middle school and danced competitively throughout high school. I also coached cheerleading while in high school and college," said Melissa.

Bandette of The Week Melissa

This week, we take a look at 5th year vet Melissa as our Bandette of The Week. She's been dancing since the age of 2 and she's been cheering non-stop since Jr High school. Her first year on the Bandettes was during her freshman year in college. She's been working in community and public relations since graduation and she's even used the journalism education she received in college for the Bandettes. The last few years, when a Bandette has been selected as NLL Girl of The Week, Melissa has been the one writing about her squadmate. Buffalo Jills and Bandettes Pictures of The Week

This will be the final edition of the Pictures of The Week for the 2008 offseason as we start up the Jill of The Week feature next week with pictures and info of the 48 members of the 2008-09 Buffalo Jills. This week's Jills photo comes direct from Jills Director Stephanie M and features the women who guide the Jills through their training, their responsibilities, and on gamedays.
On the left, we have the Jills choreographer Kelli Wagner. Kelli took her current job with the Jills in 2002 and does more than turn heads at the Ralph on gamedays. She has successfully grown the Junior Jills organization into a coveted program for youth in Western New York and it’s surrounding areas. Kelli’s choreography has also been featured on Fox TV, ABC-Buffalo, several Buffalo radio station events, many community events, overseas military shows, as well as HSBC Arena-Buffalo. Kelli is the three time recipient of America’s Young Choreographer of the Year and has received numerous choreography and high score awards. In the middle is Jills Director Stephanie Mateczun and Steph spent a number of years on the sideline herself before taking the reins as Jills Director in 2002. Since then, the Jills have added on the Ambassador Squad, gotten more national positive recognition, many more appearance requests, and the Jills Swimsuit Calendar now includes every member of the squad. Other squads, even with their smaller numbers, only include a part of the squad on their calendars. Nichole Becker, on the right, is in her 3rd season as the coordinator after cheering through the 2000-2005 seasons, along with rookie squadmates Omarlla and Eileen. It was a new position created because of all the extra work that goes into the squad the past several years. Nichole was actually already performing some of the duties of coordinator her last few seasons as captain but the increased popularity and exposure of the squad caused the position of coordinator to become a full-time one.

From the Bandettes, we have a pic taken near the end of the 3rd quarter of the first game against the Minnesota Swarm. Incidentally, home games against the Swarm will be fewer and farther between as the NLL recently announced that Minnesota would be moving to the NLL's West Division. But I digress. This picture, taken just before the squad went out on the floor for their 3rd intermission routine, features Bandettes co-captains Melissa and Meghan with rookie Justina smiling for the camera. The smiles may have been from the way the game was going. After falling behind 9-6 at the half, the Bandits poured on 5 goals to none in the 3rd to hold an 11-9 lead at the time this picture was taken.

Continuing our look into the past at the Buffalo Bombshells, we see current Buffalo Bandette Korinne in a pic from the 2002 AFL season.

Buffalo Jills and Bandettes Photos of The Week

Once again we take a look at a photo from the Jills Congratulatory Party as our first photo. This one was taken after 97Rock's DJ Jickster brought all the rookies out in front of the stage and had a few of the rookies answer some Bills trivia questions. Here we see Lonna, Lynn, and Murissa waiting for a question while Alison, seen twirling her hair in an effort to fluster poor Jickster, is about to answer the question posed to her. Not seen in this photo are the other 2 rookies were were chosen for this trivia questiona-and-answer session, Stephanie Br and Kristin B.

Our second pic is, once again, from last year's Jills Golf Tournament (this year's is coming up on the 21st!). This pic was taken after the actual tournament while the golfers were returning to the clubhouse for dinner, entertainment, and the raffle. Seen here is the director's husband Jon posing with 4 members of the Jills Ambassador Squad. From left to right are Vincenza, Amanda F, Katherine, and Danielle. A word of advice to anyone who'll be golfing at Fox Valley on Monday in the tournament. If your golf party is just ahead of Jon's and they're catching up to you, don't waste your time asking the Jills to distract him to slow him down. As Katie K told a golfer who asked that 2 years ago, "He's immune to us being able to distract him." LOL

This week, our Bandettes photo is actually from a road game. The Buffalo-Rochester rivalry in the NLL is an intense one for a few different reasons. Some players have played for both teams, they face off in the playoffs quite frequently it seems, and obviously the proximity to one another is a big factor as well. Due in part to this proximity, some Knightingales cheerleaders come to Buffalo when the teams face off and likewise, our Buffalo Bandettes have a group going to Rochester quite regularly. In this April's matchup in Rochester, the stands boasted 3 of the Buffalo Bandettes. While the quantity was small, the quality was large as the 3 that went were fan favorite Sarah and co-captains Meghan and Melissa.

Bandette of The Week Melissa

This is her 4th year with the Bandettes but she's been dancing for 19 years all totaled. Melissa is currently an advertising and PR intern but, as we saw last week in a pair of articles, she started off her college career pursuing a career in journalism. Not one to leave that completely behind her, she reported on the Bandettes' visit to Stone's Buddies and also put together the NLL Girl of The Week article for Erin Y. Whether she'll one day land a spot on one of the local stations one day soon remains to be seen but it's hard to imagine her straying far from Buffalo. She's a total Buffalo sports nut and has been known to take in a Bills game from time to time as well as the Bandits.

Melissa's contributions to the Bandettes go beyond dancing and writing however. This season, the Bandettes still have Erin H and Erin Y as their captains but now Melissa is Erin H's co-captain. This addition has allowed the squads to vary their routines a little bit as well as allow someone to develop their leadership abilities while helping the current captains on a regular basis. Buffalo Jill of The Week Melissa

Every so often, a Jill will decide not to return because her schedule is just too hectic to be able to commit to being on the squad but finds the time, in the future, to come back. Melissa is just such a girl. She spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons on the sidelines dazzling fans with her incredible smile but took the 2006 season off. Part of that time off was spent with a Disney On Ice tour. No, she wasn't performing...they didn't want to risk melting the ice at the arenas. She worked in sales while traveling with the tour and, probably not surprisingly, shows sold out rather quickly. Think how quickly they would've sold had she been performing. She left the tour early however, partly because she missed her dogs so much. At the Animal Attraction event 2 years ago, she showed off Daisy to the fans but she has 3 more as well that she loves immensely as well. Now she's back and has shown she hasn't lost a step nor has her smile lost its gleam in that year off as she dances on Jamie's line right between Jamie and Kaitlin B. Bandette of the Week Melissa

3rd year vet Melissa is a girl who'll never get tired of the spotlight, it seems. Besides the fact she's been dancing for 18 of her 20 years and cheering since Jr. High, she plans on getting in front of the spotlight in another way...as a TV news anchor. We can only hope one of Buffalo's stations has an opening at just the right time...so she doesn't wind up going elsewhere to pursue her goals. After all, why should some other city reap the rewards of getting another beautiful news anchor?

Bandette Profiles: Melissa

Third year Bandette Melissa loves jazz dancing the most because it gives her a chance to express her personality, which can be seen as unique, as she was voted most likely to go to jail by her fellow Bandettes last year. She loves performing at Bandits games and putting on the different outfits that the Bandettes get to wear.
