Amazing Race comes to the finish

For the 1st time, the Buffalo Pro Cheer Blog followed a reality show pretty closely thanks to the fact that Buffalo Jills alum Katherine (2007-08) was one of the contestants along with her new husband. After a rough start to the race, Max and Katie had 1st place finishes the last two weeks going into last night's 2-hour finale. The 1st part of the finale, which took place in Scotland and Ireland, was promising as Max and Katie again finished 1st, setting themselves up nicely for their trip back to the States.

Had they finished the race in Europe, Max and Katie would be $1,000,000 richer but luck wasn't with them in the challenge at the Tidal Basin. After receiving a briefcase with their clue upon arrival, Max had to exchange the briefcase for another containing the next set of instructions. Unfortunately, he had to almost circle the entire Tidal Basin to find the man with their next instructions. Whereas most of the challenges along the entire race were dependent on skills, this one seemed to be all luck. The rest of the leg was spent trying to catch up and had they had another challenge or two, they likely would've won as they did seem to gain on the leaders and eventual winners, the Hockey brothers Bates and Anthony Battaglia.

They called into Winging It! Monday morning after the finale aired and the audio of the call is up online.
Max and Katie learned a lot about themselves and each other through this. Katie said during the Race that if they got through it without killing each other, they could get through anything. Even though they didn't win the million dollars, they won a lot more. These days, more than 50% of all marriages end in divorce. With everything this race put them through, I'd say they'll be one of the long-lasting marriages that won't end that way. That's probably worth more than any amount of money.

Don't miss the season finale of The Amazing Race!

On a personal note, I don't generally care much for reality TV...I hate when the whole world sees something that's supremely personal. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Making The Team series is one of those that's guilty of it. It's one thing when you see someone upset on a scripted TV show because it's just acting but when it's real, it's a whole other thing. Many people enjoy it, real or not, but when it's you that's on tv seeing it later, or it's someone you know, it's not generally anything enjoyable to watch. When Lydia Dominick was with CW23 and doing in-depth looks at Buffalo Jills tryouts, she put class and humanity above cheap thrills and kept it looking positive, not showing girls getting upset when missing the cut. Quite frankly, I think shows like the DCC show should take a cue from the way Lydia handled things, and she had only been on the job a few months at that point.

One reality show that's grown quite popular is The Amazing Race, now in its 22nd season. In Season 14, a pair of former Miami Dolphins cheerleaders were part of the competition and wound up finishing in 2nd place. A pair of Jills had contemplated doing the show after that as well but eventually decided against it. However, another girl who had worn the Jills uniform recently got the idea as well along with her new husband. After being married for about a month, Max and Katie (2007-2008 Buffalo Jills Ambassador) started off on The Amazing Race.

Their contest started off rough with some troubles in SouthEast Asia and Africa, including a last place finish in Botswana that had fans fearful that Max and Katie would be eliminated. Thankfully, that was a non-elimination leg and then, after making it to Europe, they really hit their stride with a 3rd place finish and 2 1st place finishes in Germany(winning a pair of new cars) and Scotland. That's where we stand right now as the season ends Sunday night at 8pm ET on CBS with a 2-hour finale as Max and Katie go up against 3 other pairs of racers in an attempt to win $1 million to really get their lives together started off in a great way. The filming was all done in November and December of last year and, of course, Max and Katie are sworn to secrecy on how things ended up. After Sunday night, they won't have to be silent anymore.
Check them out on their Facebook fan page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Max-Katie-Amazing-Race-Season-22/118709101632161?fref=ts and check out the videos, one as an intro and the other that was just filmed on Buffalo's CW23 Winging It Show this past Thursday!

Buffalo Jill of The Week Katherine

This week, we take a look at another of our beautiful Jills Ambassadors as the Jill of The Week in blonde bombshell Katherine. This was her second season on the squad and also her second year as one of the Jills accompanying golfers around the course at the annual Jills Golf Tournament that was held at Fox Valley Country Club this past July. It's rather fitting that she got that duty 2 years in a row as she herself is quite the experienced golfer. Odds are she hit her fair share of golf balls while out there on the links with her golf party. Maybe, after she finishes her degree in pharmacy, she'll find time enough to golf in the LPGA and knock Natalie Gulbis off her perch as the hottest woman in the sport. You can read more about Katy at http://www.buffalojills.net/bios/katherine.html and don't forget to check out her 97Rock Photo Album at http://www.97rock.com/Article.asp?id=1083378&spid=21992

Buffalo Jills and Bandettes Photos of The Week

Once again we take a look at a photo from the Jills Congratulatory Party as our first photo. This one was taken after 97Rock's DJ Jickster brought all the rookies out in front of the stage and had a few of the rookies answer some Bills trivia questions. Here we see Lonna, Lynn, and Murissa waiting for a question while Alison, seen twirling her hair in an effort to fluster poor Jickster, is about to answer the question posed to her. Not seen in this photo are the other 2 rookies were were chosen for this trivia questiona-and-answer session, Stephanie Br and Kristin B.

Our second pic is, once again, from last year's Jills Golf Tournament (this year's is coming up on the 21st!). This pic was taken after the actual tournament while the golfers were returning to the clubhouse for dinner, entertainment, and the raffle. Seen here is the director's husband Jon posing with 4 members of the Jills Ambassador Squad. From left to right are Vincenza, Amanda F, Katherine, and Danielle. A word of advice to anyone who'll be golfing at Fox Valley on Monday in the tournament. If your golf party is just ahead of Jon's and they're catching up to you, don't waste your time asking the Jills to distract him to slow him down. As Katie K told a golfer who asked that 2 years ago, "He's immune to us being able to distract him." LOL

This week, our Bandettes photo is actually from a road game. The Buffalo-Rochester rivalry in the NLL is an intense one for a few different reasons. Some players have played for both teams, they face off in the playoffs quite frequently it seems, and obviously the proximity to one another is a big factor as well. Due in part to this proximity, some Knightingales cheerleaders come to Buffalo when the teams face off and likewise, our Buffalo Bandettes have a group going to Rochester quite regularly. In this April's matchup in Rochester, the stands boasted 3 of the Buffalo Bandettes. While the quantity was small, the quality was large as the 3 that went were fan favorite Sarah and co-captains Meghan and Melissa.

Buffalo Jills Photos of The Week

This week, we have a couple different sources for pictures. The first pic comes from this year's Jills Congratulatory Party held at Club Paradise the night of the NFL Draft. It features the formerly shy Vincenza, a 2nd year member of the Ambassador Squad with rookie Rita, who showed off her dance moves at the Open Workshop this year. You can see her in this video for example. http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a375/buffalojills2005/2008/Open%20Workshop/?action=view&current=70.flv That's her directly behind Lisa in the white pants and red and white striped shirt.

Our second pic comes from last year's Buffalo Jills Golf Tournament and features Ambassador Squad members Danielle, Katherine, Laura, and Amanda F getting set to head out on the course with their golf parties. Danielle, Katherine, and Amanda were each bid on by golfers to join their groups for the day. So in addition to seeing the Jills at lunch and dinner as well as at various holes around the course, 3 lucky foursomes each had a member of the Buffalo Jills accompanying them all 18 holes as well. This year's Golf Tournament will also be held at Fox Valley Country Club in Lancaster, NY and takes place on July 21st so don't hesitate to make sure you have the day off for this event!

In addition to the Golf Tournament, we'll see numerous rookie Jills at the Taste of Buffalo on July 11 and 12th in Niagara Square in downtown Buffalo. Just look for the Bills booth as well as booths for 97Rock and 103.3 The Edge to meet some of these beautiful young rookie Jills.

Buffalo Jill of The Week Katherine

Katherine, or Katie as she's known to her friends, was one of the first rookies to make a splash in a public appearance this past season as she and the other Katie K dropped the puck for a Sabres Alumni Game in Jamestown last year. This country music lover spent the season on the Ambassador Squad and is known as a very determined young lady. It's fitting that she's a Jill of The Week around tryouts because of her determination. A number of current and past Buffalo Jills have made the squad after missing the cut in previous tries and Katie was part of the group in 2006 trying out but was, thankfully for her and for us, persistant and came back in 2007 and nailed a spot on the final roster. You can read more about Katie at http://buffalojills.net/bios/katherinek.html

Pictures from the Sabres Alumni Game in Jamestown

Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena was the setting as members of the
Buffalo Sabres Alumni squared off against the Labatt Blue All-Stars in
a charity hockey game to benefit the Lakers' Sled Hockey program, the
Special Olympics skating program and the ice arena. Former Sabres stars
like Morris Titanic, Daryl Shannon, and Rob Ray took the ice for the
Sabres Alumni and former Buffalo Bills kicker Steve Christie was on
hand to drop the puck for the opening faceoff. Also on hand were 3rd
year vet Katie K and rookie Katherine K of the Buffalo Jills. They met
and greeted the fans and even got to drop the puck for the opening
faceoff of the 2nd period as well as pose for pictures with fans and
mascots. Here are a few photos of those 2 lovely ladies.
